26th Jan simply represents a day when an English ship full of convicts landed in NSW. Makes perfect sense for a NSW citizen but diidly squat for anyone else. Why cant we we have Australia day on 6th June?. Captain Stirling sailed up the Swan river on that date. Makes about as much sense. 1st January is the date we started to throw out our colonial past and all states came together as a UNITED australia. Therefore it is was the start of being known as Australia and not Van Diemans land or some other relic of the past. However it is not likely to happen until we bring on the republic and then it will change to the date we become a republic. Cant come soon enough. Just waiting for Liz and Phil to pass because the people will not cop Charlie.
