    Absolute piffle. Just more right-wing outrage in search of a target.

    As has been pointed out, there's nothing traditional, "sacred" or even logical about January 26 being a day of national commemoration or observance. Howard elevated it as part of his culture war and many of us have ignored it ever since. There are many other days that could be celebrated without invoking the negative connotations of invasion and dispossession. Investing a single act of east coast colonisation (rather than, say, nationhood) with some sort of national "meaning" is designed to fracture and divide our society. If you are so upset about people ignoring it or protesting or telling their own stories, find another day.
