It's not a bad strategy. Borrow billions, give it all away, secure diplomatic posts for your unionist backers ... then when you get voted out blame the incumbents for the inevitable austerity required. The public have short memories. Once the debt is paid off (10-15 years from now) Labor can come back and do it all again.
