"whtilam increased government spending by 50%. He was so short of money he tried to get a loan from a Pakistani arms dealer and yet he was producing surpluses!!!!"

What utter Bullshit. People's handle on history is based on what the Daily Mirror told them. The audited budget papers tell a different story.
The chase of Arab loans was not because "they ran out of money"...far from it...they had grand designs to fund nation building infrastructure... but his representative went outside loan council regulations with his pursuit of cheaper debt, because the debt amounts they wanted ($4 billion +) were ridiculously huge for those times.
Which part of these audited numbers don't you understand Loric:
1972-73, cash surplus of $294 million, no debt
1973-74, cash surplus of $1,064 million, no debt
1974-75, cash surplus of $50 million, no debt
What Whitlam (like Howard and Costello did later) was to leave a structural
deficit for later governments.
