Until recently, Australia and Russia were the two only advanced economies without the standard.

But on Sunday the minister for climate change and energy, Chris Bowen, and the minister for transport, regional development and local government, Catherine King, announced Australia will adopt the “New Vehicle Efficiency Standard”.

The standard, which was made available online on Sunday, will apply to new passenger and light commercial vehicles in Australia, and bring it into line with the United States.

    About time!!!

The Government’s announcement of a simple and transparent fuel efficiency standard for new cars which will get Australia on track with countries like us to clean up our fleet of light vehicles. Unfortunately too far off though.New cars 2027/28 and bangers for another 10 years +

“Australians – especially those in our suburbs and regions – deserve access to the same choice of affordable, clean and safe cars that are already being sold in their millions overseas. A strong fuel efficiency standard can help deliver this." - Climate Councillor Greg Bourne
