We have had a history of foreign ownership in Australia but in the past it was mostly farming and commercial properties which in turn produced a benefit to the country.
This was purely due to the fact they had the money to invest and Australia didn’t, but when it gets into residential housing it does affect the bulk of the Australian people as it (apart from short term jobs) does nothing for the country that we couldn’t do ourselves.
It just happens that it is the Chinese who are the problem at this particular time as they are the current affluent group who are financially repressed in their own country.
We also have some large Arab holdings as well so it not a racial thing but an economic thing.
I also believe that Australians are becoming more aware of the loss of sovereignty which happens when foreign governments are not restricted in buying property in Australia.
The large land purchase up in the Kimberly is an example in that they purchased the land well under the Australian value and the cost of the Australian Government development and now want to bring in Chinese workers to work the land to produce products to take back to China to sell, where is the Australian economic benefit or control, we have a right to demand better regardless of where they come from
