Most of the population are Buddhist Sinhalese, maybe a quarter Tamil (Hindu) and a few Christian Anglos, Europeans, and fewer Islamics.
The civil war ended more than a decade ago, and the country is peaceful except for the muslims.

As a curiosity, there are fields of tobacco, cannabis and opium poppies too. We eat in the country food shops, where farm workers sit at trestle tables. Most of the food is spicy. Once they realise you are not from the government, they are happy to talk. I always travel with driver/interpreter and near new Toyota all in cost about $30 a day. Everyone agrees thank god the war is over - peace.
