Having experience with children and animals, I do know the old expression....
"The 2 things you can't guarantee in life, is children and animals" No matter what you do, there can always be something out of left field, that you had not prepared for.
So by the actions of your animal or child (like getting into trouble because of the wrong crowd, but then hopefully learning from a life experience like a lot of us have), would you be prepared to be jailed for something you could not foresee. labelled a crim, when you personaly had done nothing bad by any one??
