There are far too many academics with no knowledge or conception of reality giving sermons from their lofty platforms and even worse there are far too many people who actually believe them
Australia may be a low "direct" payee taxation country but when you consider the amount of money that the governments have at their disposal and that largest proportion is from individual workers, not companies, not resources, then the statement is automatically proven false. You have to look at the multitude of indirect taxes, fees, charges etc that the government collects to get a true picture
If you want to dispute that just look at the costs incurred in a sub-division development.
In my early days it was usually 5% to 10 % --- now over 50%
If we were a low tax paying country where is the money coming from
