Absence of basic sense appears to be a continuing failing for lots of people over the years right up to the present: what you're suggesting is that when Australia's population in 1915 was <5m the politicians of the day, instead of committing troops to help the Mother Country not only as patriotism but as "insurance" against who-knows-what-in-the-future, should have been isolationist, as was the USA until Germany started sinking American ships especially the liner Lusitania. And it was the might of the then young USA which helped bring WW! to an end. As it was also in WW2.

Putin showed by his act of invading Crimea & then later Ukraine that if dictators & aggressors aren't stopped they become bolder & more aggressive.
