given there are very few records of weather/climate in much or the world in that era, glacier samples from European, Himalayan and American mountains as well as Antarctic/Arctic offered a lot of evidence. the temperatures and other indicators of climate, such as pollens, dust, decaying particles, coupled with solar science now available, were able to determine that the Little Ice Age happened..... generally. not specific to region although different glacier samples collected elements more from proximal continental land may have had similar climatic changes.
theres evidence enough to say it was wide spread. the factors listed above, particularly solar cycles, were pertinent in this event.
but this is beside the point of our current climate issues.
