whilst when one sells off farms (any real estate ) -- the point is that if the owners are foreign - they can't take the land away

they can, however, damage it badly - therein lies a risk for selling RE involving land to foreigners

ditto selling off resource companies -

frankly I've always thought it downright stupid that Oz should allow such activities - if others think that Oz assets are that valuable - then, Oz shouldn't be selling them off at all - it's a crazy notion -

then, if they are merely laundering money - well, Oz shouldn't be involved in that either..

Whilst I think you are stretching the Chinese future thinking by a few hundred years - they clearly do think further into the future than Ozzies - who appear to be short sighted in the extreme.

It's odd that of most of the nations on earth - it's a place like Oz who actually needs to think further into the future and prepare itself as a nation than most other nations on earth - and, most certainly large area nations.

yet - Oz is close enough to the least forward looking and the least prepared. It is truly amazing how a nation like Oz can be almost fully dependent on it's resource base ---------------- then, manage to sell almost all of it's resource companies off to foreign interests ---

that's got to go down in history as one of the biggest strategic and economic blunders of all time

it's really akin to some newly discovered native tribe selling off property for a handful of beads and an axe
