Can only talk about Melbourne specifically but there is a great amount of positive benefits in shifting our ageing population out of the inner city and away to coastal and country areas, somewhere desirable, we have many, areas where the weather is warm and sunny. Build communities with all the required services needed to enjoy a comfortable retirement. Subsidise it even.

The government has a couple of problems. There is a major fight going on with people wanting to live as close to the city as possible. Young singles, young families, elderly and migrants. The majority of Australia's elderly have enjoyed a wealth boom. And they have what everyone else wants. A pad close to the city and close to the jobs.

My question is: How much easier and cost effective would it be to shift the elderly away from the city's than it is to find the money for infrastructure, job creation, crime prevention, services and suffer all the big side effects that come with running single level cities that spread for 50-100 kilometres in width?

I've got no doubt the elderly want this as well. They are waiting for the leadership to provide the incentive.
