For cities to be built inland, they must have water. Hang Longcock wanted to use all the mine tailings to build a mountain range across the WA state border. This would apparently cause rain to fall in the desert. Government rejected the idea.
It is going to be an enormous project to bring the water inland. The Ord River can supply the water, just needs a politician to decide to go ahead with it. It would take several years, find work for thousands, who would then pay tax. Cities along the new waterway would flourish, people would then move inland, and they would pay tax too. Eventually, the scheme would pay for itself.
