a major driver of the desire to increase the Aus popn is the problem of an ageing population together with increased medical and other expenditure that comes with ageing.
Not many people (I would imagine) would be willing to sacrifice the quality of their twilight years to maintain the Aus popn at what they see as an ideal level.

attitudes would change in an instant should people start to be declined life-saving treatment because the dwindling taxpayer base can no longer afford it.
