One problem I think not explored in depth enough is how many older Australians are under-employed. How many retire before they really want to due to being forced out of the labour market? How many older Australians suffer burn out?

If we have a population living longer surely they should be working longer.

Many though know the minute they leave a secure job over age of say 45 or maybe 50 the possibiliy of re-entry to the workforce in a meaningful way is rather low. By this stage have worked 25-30 years and you really need a sabbatical, well many do and so they become quite depressed in the wrokforce.

So people should be encouraged to have a 2 year break at say age 45-50 when the kids have fled, with the proviso they then work another 25 years. They can do their travel, de-stress, re-skill or start a business. However not an option for this to be done voluntarily when you find so many barriers to re-enter the workforce at that age.

So really would like to know how many older people are under-employed, unemployed or retiring too early just because they need a breather. Silly retiring good skills too early.
