We have some fantastic indigenous staff but in a lot of locations we really struggle to even get applicants for the indigenous community and so we recruit a farmer’s wife or a Uni recruit who only wants to work "way out west" for 6 months or so before moving back to Brisbane to do social work. We also really struggle to get interest from the community, in a lot of remote communities domestic violence is so common it is not considered a crime or a problem, it is simply a normal part of life and the community will not report it or buy into programs that try to educate people about it.

Now I completely understand the historical issues and mistrust indigenous people have of the government and police, but what would make me shed tears of happiness would be if large parts of the community actively wanted to improve their lot, wanted to see their kids finish school, or even attend regularly and thought that domestic violence, drug use and so on were things that were holding their mob back.

Unfortunately, it does not happen often enough, and the indigenous staff that are recruited are often ostracised within their own communities for being big time Charlie's with job sand money. Now some of that attitude is the white fellas fault, but thec hange needs to come from within the indigenous community, not from without.

Hobbes, in many tribal communities violence against a spouse is a traditional norm. The"Rule of thumb" is a saying regarding the thickness of an implement that can be used against a wife. Ie, no wider than a thumb.

These remote communities with no work are stuck in a time warp and why it should be financially supported is something that never really gets answered.

I know Wanderer, but in those same societies most other traditions are not used. Spearing as a punishment for example. My point is these problems need to be fixed by within Aboriginal society. And saying but it's a tradition is just a cop out in my opinion. People are adaptable, look how much change there has been within Australian society as a whole in the past 30 years. People making excuses for issues in aboriginal society and hindering, not helping.

If it wasn't for the white man..... they would be extinct by now. I wonder how the old aborigines would have lasted if it was Sampans landing on the beaches ??
If they are as good as you say they are, let them stay in the bush with no welfare, live off the land as well, and forget any rifles, steel knives and cigarette lighters.................... Oh no, they are already worried !!!
