At the core of this diplomatic car crash is Morrison trying to big note himself with a call for China to hold an inquiry into the COVID-19 outbreak. Why? What purpose does it serve Australia's immediate interests to tell another sovereign state what they should do? And did he expect China to cower in fear from this demand? Morrison is an idiot.
This open call for an inquiry does not serve Australia's interests because there is no doubt an inquiry will happen and the major powers will demand it. Australia is not a major power and Morrison knows this. The mining and agricultural sectors of the economy depend on the China market and that is not something that can change overnight. Morrison talking tough makes no sense.
The USA could make this call because they have a huge trade deficit with China. A threat by USA to cease imports from China is a real threat. Australia is on a different boat. It's economy depends on selling stuff to China.
We are being lead by a grade 1 fool.
