They didn't buy their way in like China is doing.
China is buying an economic hold over many countries across the globe, but with the exception of Australia they are all third world countries in SE Asia and Africa. So Australia is the exception probably because we have always sold our land and natural wealth to the highest bidder.
China is only using force in two areas that I am aware of, the South China Sea and Tibet both of which it claims are historically part of China.

I agree, and Taiwan if they could which I'm sure they will achieve one day.
These third world countries will eventually start to push back violently when they are drowning in Chinese debt. It is happening now in Pakistan.
