Today’s monthly inflation data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirms inflation is still homegrown, too high and sticky.

While interest rates are coming down in the US, UK, Canada, Eurozone and New Zealand, they aren’t in Australia.

In fact the Reserve Bank Governor confirmed yesterday that there are no rate cuts in sight.

Since the election, the price of everything has gone up by nearly 10% including:

    Health up 11%

    Education up 11%

    Food up 12%

    Housing up 13%

    Rents up 16%

    Financial and insurance up 17%

    Gas up 34%

Australia’s living standards are falling by levels not seen in other advanced economies.

After six quarters of negative per capita growth, Australia is in the longest per capita recession in 50 years.

Today it was also revealed that Labor is modelling tax changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing.

This would be a clear broken promise.

There are 2.4 million Australians claiming rental deductions.

A housing tax will only reduce supply and push up rents, at a time when the dream of home ownership is out of reach for too many Australians.

Labor needs to focus on doing their job, which is to bring core inflation down so that interest rates can come down and Australians' standards of living can be restored.

A Peter Dutton led Coalition government will get Australia back on track.

We will deliver strong economic management that fights inflation and boosts productivity.

We will encourage first home buyers and restore the dream of home ownership.

We will be absolutely focused on restoring Australians’ way of life.

    Kind regards,

    Shadow Treasurer
