Australia is boosting its trade ties with resource-rich West Africa.
TRADE Minister Craig Emerson has announced the government will create a new trade commissioner position to be based in the Ghanian capital Accra.
Austrade official Gordon Chakoadza will take up the role in August, tasked with developing Australia's trade and investment ties across West Africa.
"Africa still faces many challenges, but the continent is entering a bright new phase of stability and growth," Dr Emerson said in a statement on Friday.
"West Africa in particular is rich in natural resources, and Australia stands ready to support countries in the region as they strive to reach their economic potential."
The move comes just weeks after the government announced plans to open a new embassy in nearby Senegal.
