I found it strange yesterday when asking the fruit and vegetable section of coles why we were importing asparagus.
His reply was that they could get no guarantee of supply in Australia and is why they were importing from mexico .The consumer wants the supply all year round this is the problem for many i think .Garlic was another he said they now get from mexico .
But yep we are exporting asparagus?
The market dictates now where it comes from and that goes for the consumer as well. Simply put we dont want seasonal food now but want it all year round.
If the big companies can import cheaper and reliable they will and they also will export the same produce at higher prices if demand is there .
Cheap in expensive out comes to mind . Also we have think of contracts these companies make.
