Its now official. We have the most unaffordable housing in the world.
How on earth did this happen in a country with more land per head than any developed country in the world?
    Two main reasons.
    1. bad planning by state govts, ( and cosy relationships between developers and planning ministers).
    2. bad tax policy.

Tax breaks are given to property investors who are partly responsible for driving out first home buyers. If you work for an employer you are taxed at a marginal rate approx 45 %.
If you invest in a property and keep it for over a year you are taxed at only half that rate.

And now what are they doing about it? Urban infill! Lots of small blocks with grey houses and charcoal roofs where once there was a single house on a bigger block with trees and lawn.No wonder that temperatures are rising in the burbs and kids have nowhere to play.
To top it all off, the quality of new-build houses is quite poor compared to most developed countries,so we not only pay way too much, we are getting dudded on quality too.
    What a mess.
