I used to think the same way as I am all for uniformity and adopting and deploying best practices across all states, e.g standardised school curriculum , best hospital standards, best practices pandemic management and protocol implementation and ensuring politicians are more than just bureaucrats, that they can be elected and placed in roles in which they have capabilities.

But of course it is all utopian wishful thinking , and the pandemic showed us why we should be thankful we have State Governments , if it wasn't we would probably be in a state close to the US (as our Fed Govt was all for a measured/balanced approach, the same stance in UK and US).

The idea can work if politicians do less politicking and positioning policies to improve their electibility (within and outside their parties) and put people first on their agenda. And we know that politics have been failing recently because it is too single focussed on winning elections (to stay in power) , political spins and maneuvering ahead of People and Country.

Smaller governments certainly save taxpayers money that could well be used to help all Australians financially but at the same time it places greater powers in the hands of a few. And we know what happened in the US recently.
