    Negroponte named US' Iraq envoy
    From correspondents in Washington
    April 20, 2004

US President George W Bush announced today that he had picked John Negroponte, his envoy to the United Nations, as the first US ambassador to Iraq since Saddam Hussein's ouster.
"John Negroponte is a man of enormous experience and skill. That's why I'm comfortable in asking him to serve in this very difficult assignment: There's no doubt in my mind he can handle it," Bush said in the Oval Office.

If confirmed by the US Senate, Negroponte would move from New York to Baghdad to head up what will eventually be the largest US embassy in the world with some 3000 employees, including 700 to 1000 Americans.
