the US dollar was once backed by gold every U S dollar printed was guaranteed that Fort Knox had the gold to cover the amount . But they soon realised they needed more dollar notes but there was not enough gold so they took the gold backing off the dollar which gave the treasury the green light to print as much as it needs and it has been doing so quite well ?
