When Ricky Ponting was Captain, the selectors nominated Michael Clarke as the future Captain and began the "grooming" process.
Promising someone the Captaincy unconditionally is stupid and Clarkes results as Captain proves it. Clarke has the worse win/loss ratio in modern times. You have to go back before Alan Border to find worse.
The exact same is now happening with Steve Smith, except it's even worse again. First time in Australian cricket history where Australia has lost a one day series 5/nil. If South Africa wins in Adelaide, it will be the first time in Australian cricket history where Australia has lost a test match series on home soil with visitors all and home side zip.
In the first SA test, combining both innings, Australian batsmen 7,8 & 9 scored twice as many runs as batsmen 4,5 & 6. Hello? We have a problem.
I'm not saying that Steve Smith is the problem. What I am saying is that Clarke was a bad choice which wasn't fixed and this highlights an underlying problem with the whole selection process.
