Well, in that case, there are some very pronounced, deep red shaded areas in certain years going back 37 years ago and earlier (refer 1982, 1967 in the SE part of the country, 1957, 1944, 1940 (how bad was that one?), 1927, and 1902.)

I think it takes a very special and unique brand of bias to look at that chart and privately conclude that things have been worse in recent history than they were 100 years ago, let alone try to argue it in the public domain.
