It is clear that the Federal Government spends more on roads than the Excise tax for that purpose raises.
It is only fair, as legislated and intended that non road use of diesel (eg for boats) has the road use tax rebated. I think Acorn’s argument was that the exercise tax raised exceeded its intended use for roads so was more akin to a general tax so shouldn’t be rebated, the argument doesn’t hold.
We will soon have to face the issue that Electric cars need to pay some form of road use tax.
