Everyone else, had to whistle in the wind, and accept US debt instruments, for their balance of payments.
Germany must have waited around 50 years to get its gold bullion back, gold which had been stored with the US.
Moral of the story, if a bank run is starting, then sleep outside the bank, so that you are there when the doors open.
