Beware the 'new new' thing: too soon to pencil in a boom

    Adam Courtenay

Plenty of mines, at least here in Australia, are just as willing and able as Molo to supply the commodity – they just haven’t yet been given the same degree of publicity.

There’s Archer Exploration (AXE) and Valence Industries (VXL), and the far-flung Talga Resources (TLG) and Kibaran Resources (KNL).

Archer claims the Eyre Peninsula deposit is Australia’s biggest, with a compliant resource of 8.55 million tonnes at an average grade of 9% (770,800t).

Valence announced infill drilling results at its Uley project, confirming flake graphite mineralisation grading of 10% to 47%. Kibaran, meanwhile, says it’s fast-tracking its Epanko deposit in Tanzania to production, following an upgrade to 12.8mt at a 10% grade (1.28mt).

Even further afield, Talga is scouring airborne and ground data for more deposits similar to its Nunasvarra deposit in northern Sweden.

Apparently the Australians can produce better quality graphite more cheaply than their big rivals, the Canadians, but this may be hype as well. It sounds all so typical of a new new thing, reminiscent of the rare earths brouhaha of about three years ago. They weren’t rare and they weren’t earths.
