Blueballs, you say interest rates peaked in 1980.
I was working for a large bank in the late 80's and remember writing housing loans at about 19%.Retirees were able to get 17.5% on term deposit monies invested.
But I can't remember who was in govt in the late 80's.
But people have to remember they can't have it all ways.
There's low unemployment, good wages being paid to the average worker, a booming economy ,huge increase in house values over last few years.
So the lucky ones are those that set themselves up a few years ago with a house.
But it must be tough for the younger ones now looking to buy a house.
The govt can't win, whoever is in power,as people will complain if there is a recession and also complain when there is a booming economy because interest rates have to go up to curb spending.
Natural cycles thats been going on since beginning of time.
too much greed in aust doesnt help things.
