Well here's a story about Gallipoli verterans I'm proud of and I hope that I would have joined them, and I know that it's a story you don't wish to hear. This was their real fight. There is an ABC podcast I heard some years ago describing this event from Bankstown in about 1933. I can only find this. You'll have to find the podcast.

Nadia Wheatley: On Wednesday the 17th of June there occurred an event at Bankstown which was the furthest you could go on that particular trainline at that time, it was country in a way. In the particular street, Brancourt Avenue there were weatherboard houses widely separated still by paddocks and bits of scrub and it's not the kind of place that you'd expect to have civil commotion or a riot. There occurred something which was described by the Sydney Morning Herald as "one of the most serious disturbances ever dealt with by the police in New South Wales". It was described by The Sun as "the fiercest fight between police and communists in the history of Sydney". And it was described by the Labor Daily as "the most serious and significant event of its kind in the history of the state".

The police arrived at Brancourt Avenue at a house that was being occupied by the unemployed because the tenant was due to be evicted. This tenant was aged 39, he was an ex-soldier, he'd been invalid at home from the war, and amongst the pickets or the occupiers of the house were a large number of Gallipoli veterans. These were not young hotheads, a lot of them were men in their thirties. They had occupied and barricaded the house for three weeks. They had barricaded the house with sandbags - it's very important the connection with old diggers - the unemployed treated these houses as they might have treated the trenches of the Somme, they had barbed wire, they had trenches and they had sandbags.

Drew Cottle: The man who was renting the house was a World War One veteran, he'd been gassed on the Western Front twice.

Lea Redfern: Drew Cottle, historian at the University of Western Sydney, has also looked into the battle of Bankstown.

Drew Cottle: He'd been hospitalised, brought back to Australia, was given a pension and he had two small children and his wife to support. He was only five pounds in arrears and he was in no position in a sense, to even pay that money.

Alex Makarov: I was playing the violin there that night, and one of the chaps said "I think you'd better stay here tonight, it's too far to go home". It was only well four kilometres, it wasn't anything to me then, and I said "it's cold", and he said "You'd better stay the night". I said "Oh, I'll go home". "No", he said, "just sit down there". And the other 14 or 15 of us were sitting down there, went to sleep, and the next thing we know it's morning and police were banging at the door shouting, smashing in the door. Some police came through the window, then I heard a shot, and I got a hit on the head with something or other I don't know what, then the young constable said "Come on, quick, we'd better get out of this". He was only a young chap, and so he said he'd pull me through the window and we come out at the front, and they were still battling on inside. I grabbed my violin but somebody had already jumped on it, and that was damaged.
Nadia Wheatley: There's some dispute about how many shots were fired, but one of the accounts notes that there nine holes, nine bullet holes in the house. And one man Dick Etock was shot in the thigh as he was standing in the hallway. Another man called Kendall received a lacerated scalp. If only two shots were fired, that's a bit bizarre that they both hit their mark. I don't want to discount the fact that pickets themselves fought. Inspector Robson who was outside one of the windows was hit by a stone coming out the window. However once the police were inside the house it is clear that after they had won, as it were one a terribly brutal and bloody battle took place. One of the soldiers who was in the house said it was bloodier than being at Gallipoli, that it was worse than Gallipoli what went on in the house that day. By another description, the men, the pickets when they came out of the house "had heads like bullocks' livers", they had been bashed so strenuously on the head.

After the battle was over, the police got the belongings, which included a violin, also included bits of food and bedding and made a big bonfire out the back, the belongings were ripped and torn and burnt.

Lea Redfern: Some of the reports of the time say that the police actually ended up making a bonfire out the back of the house.

Alex Makarov: I don't know what happened after that at all. With all I knew that that night, Bankstown was there in their thousands, big demonstrations, there were big demonstrations and then the New Guard turned up in their cars. I remembers that's the New Guard, the fascist organisation, the wealthy, grazier farmers, they came in about 30 cars, and I think the people wrecked all their cars, and they cleared out that night, there was a huge demonstration, the biggest they'd ever seen in Bankstown, there were thousands. All Bankstown shopping centre was covered with people and the cars, in those days there were very few cars, but there was cars everywhere, police everywhere, but nobody interfered even when the riot started between the New Guard and the public, police just kept right away from most of it, just stood back, they didn't want to have anymore trouble I don't suppose.

Nadia Wheatley: From the moment of the Bankstown battle, the Unemployed Workers Movement could have no doubt that things were really very very serious. And so for the houses which were still barricaded they knew to be on their guard.

...and who are you to say that a man cannot be more filled with rage and boiling anger at being thrown out of a house onto the street with his wife and two daughters, than what he was at the Dardanelles, which was afterall a gentlemanly fight where you knew at least that the other guy was basically the same as you.
