"Netflix costs $10 p/ month for single device but I do believe it doesn't work without internet $ 60 to 90+ dollars per month and these day most have Netflix on multiple devices so $15 per month so now we are up to $75 to $95"
If you going to do this, do it right. Internet is a necessity now so that's disingenuous and is regarded as a fixed cost. It's likely just for 1 device so $10/mth would be the actual avoidable expense. What did a movie ticket (video rental) cost or didn't you go to the movies back when you earnt $11/hr.
You bought your first house in circa 1989 for $200k at what must have been close to the top of the market with av. prices about doubled in the 4 yrs preceding it. Hence, the spike to 17.5% interest rates to restore economic sanity. Your job was infinitely more secure then and the award meant something. The gig economy would have been seen as an unthinkable threat to our socioeconomic well-being.
Every generation is relative and most people behave as everyone else does. You sat on beanbags, others collected furniture, milk crates whatever. We all did so it was normal and we were acting according to societal norms. The young now are similarly acting according to 2019 societal norms. They didn't create them but they are confined by them to a large extent.
Behavioral change is required but it requires empathy, vision and strength to act.
