I know for a fact that the Greenhouse Effect was a very real issue back in the early 80s in the scientific community. It was radical then but many thought that a transition to nuclear was the lesser of two evils. We also learnt about it in schools but you're right in that the general public wasn't really aware.

The increase in depression nowadays has gone hand in glove with the progression of trickle-down. We used to look at the high suicide rates of the Japanese, particularly young people, and say it was because they had too much pressure on them to succeed. Then we went ahead and became like them. A consequence of inequality is an increase in unhappiness.
