Having worked at ASC in Adelaide for many years, I took a package thankfully, I do feel for the small percentage of quality skilled tradesmen who actually do work a full day, yet get smeared and dumped in with those who turn up and hold their hand out at the end of the week.
The suits which there are many, cruise along with no sense of urgency and outnumber those I know who do the right thing. I will not speak about the union's as of today, but during my time in Adelaide they left it in no doubt who ran the place, but I dare say little would have changed since. It was a closed shop and if there was dis agreement between worker and union, it didn't take long for it to be made known to the worker where the front gate was, this was the power they had.
These union carry overs from many years ago, saw the demise of shipbuilding in the UK, and little has changed to my mind.
