Here are some quick graphs I slapped together in response to your query on Australias (electricity) energy mix. Comments in red are from me. Data is just graphed as extracted from the publication.

The top two show Australias energy consumption by industry for the pas 30+ years.

The second set really just shows that gas still makes a very small part of the market. Further, the increase in coal electricity is still outstripping gas growth. How big is coal eh? MASSIVE.

So with a carbon tax, the opportunity is equally as mind boggling for gas. Pity there isnt more to go around on the east coast.
