On a more positive note, I have been looking back at old newspaper reports of the first gold production at Woods Point, where the Morning Star mine is located.
This one, in The Age on 4th August 1863, is typical of the optimism...
" The Gipps Land gold-fields appear to be looking up. The Times of Friday last says : — 'A gentleman who arrived from Jericho yesterday, informs us that last week's crushing on Wood's Point, near Jericho, produced over 500 lb weight of gold — equal to more than six thousand ounces.
Such vast quantities of gold produced in our Alpine Range must have considerable influence in getting over 100 miles of the dividing ridge which separates GippsLand from the Murray district prospected during the coming summer.' "
6000 ozs, close to the surface, in one week using primitive methods!
With modern methods and machinery who knows what can be obtained from the reefs beneath...?
