You're talking about hybridisation. There is nothing wrong with mixing genes of two natural similar species to create third one with slightly different look or smell, taste like varietes of apples for example. It also happens naturally by cross pollination.
GMO stands for genetically modified ORGANISM, pay attention to word organism. So they mix genes from live creatures (organisms) with plants and create something not compatible with human body.
There is enough anti GMO research to prove it's nastiness. Why GMOs are being banned in many countries?
We don't need to play God and change nature that already is perfect.
