I've seen the reaction in employees to your last sentence in real time. When automation takes away a greater percentage of meaningful work employees tend to have more idle time on their hands, this in turn allows them to concentrate on more mischievous forms of 'entertainment' in the workplace to fill the void of having less control over processes they once controlled leading into low motivation, low morale, low self-worth.

Taking this to a larger scale it would lead to 'revolution' as those sitting idle will devise methods in an attempt take back control. In isolated work environments it usually shows up as increased industrial disputation due to dissatisfaction with wages, hours worked, conditions etc. less of an issue these days though due to limited worker representation via unions. There is no easy, or expedient way to immediately shift jobs into more productive and meaningful roles while this transition takes place so a level of disruption will prevail for decades.
