The large batch was to validate to Merc Benz a proof of concept (my words) for the battery. These batteries are large and require validation they fit the design profile of Merc Benz future EV models.
My take away from the GM was Merc Benz a pushing SKI pretty hard and whilst AUZ are tiny (BB words) they are very important in the process and as such SKI are heavily involved in AUZ being successful.
