you have just illustrated probably the biggest success of the misinformation campaign about the nuclear option...watch the video...the amount of waste generated over the lifetime of even an outdated nuclear reactor can be stored in a couple of concrete containers in a non-public area...it just isn't an issue

if the molten salt, thorium reactors were adopted... they can burn almost all the nuclear fuel and the waste is more than 80% less of what already is not the issue...the molten salt reactor is completely safe and cannot cause a pressure expansion explosion and therefore cannot cause a nuclear fallout - Fukushima and Chernobyl just can't happen with them

but like rastus says below, there were other commercial, political and national security interests that combined at the time, than safety and the clean nature of these reactors, that lead to their non-adoption more than 50 years ago...but the tech is there...and btw China are now developing them
