Thanks to the various comments and links. I understand Bots create false clicks on advertisements and therefore increase the cost to advertisers. I was trying to understand the motivation of the Bots and how they earn their revenue. From the excellent feedback and links I believe the Bots are contracted to perform their 'work' from one of the following:
1) the host engages the Bot to click on the add to increase the revenue from the advertisements; or 2) the host engages the Bot to increase the traffic to the host's web page to give the impression the web page has more traffic and thus increase its value; or 3) a competitor engages the Bot to click on the advertisement to increase the advertising spend of its competitor and thus make it less competitive.
