Generally speaking it's not really possible for traders to lose money without other traders to make money.
With the market bouncing around, a lot of money is being made and lost. The bad traders losing money necessarily mean that good traders are making money. When the price fluctuates and shares are changing hands, it's basically a zero sum game, meaning the losers are balanced by winners.
The price fluctuations are opportunities. Sure, if you're not good at trading you probably shouldn't try because someone else with better skill is probably going to gleefully take your money, but that's not to say you can't make money here, or increase your holding for free, or both.
As a very obvious example, when the DFS was delayed I dumped most of my QPM for an average of 14.5c, which was about my average buy price. Sure, if I held long term I'm confident I would have been okay, but I'm going to be able to buy them back more cheaply, meaning I'll have a significantly larger holding without spending any extra money. It was completely obvious the DFS delay was doing to drop the price, and that drop wasn't going to be fully realised within the first few minutes of trade, so why sit there holding? Even if it only allowed a 10% increase in holding, I'd be glad to take it, but it'll be more than that.
I don't have anything against the sit and hold strategy, and for many people it's best, especially if they work 9-5 day jobs or can't isolate their moves from the emotions which afflict most people who try to trade, but it's so strange that people get so resentful of people who do trade, and pretend that as a rule traders can't or don't make money and are destined to fail. This just isn't true.
