divide the total $$ spent by the total shares held = new cost/price per share average
eg
buy 100 xyz shares at $1.00 on 1st july 2016 = $100
then
buy 100 xyz shares at $2.00 on 1st august 2016 = $200
so
now hold 200 xyz shares now for a total cost of $300 = $1.50 per share
