The development of a 4.5-star hotel at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport and solar farm in Boulder are on the horizon following confidential discussions at this week’s council meeting.
Councillors discussed both the lease of a portion of land at the airport for a proposed airport hotel and the sublease of a portion of the old Boulder Golf Course for a solar farm behind-closed-doors at Monday night’s council meeting.
Speaking after the meeting, Mayor John Bowler said the names of the proponents for both proposals could not yet be revealed.
The proposed airport hotel would be established within the airport grounds about 150m from the terminal and is estimated to include more than 100 beds.
“People would be able to walk to the hotel if they land late at night, or even if they’re taking off early the next morning they could stay there,” Mr Bowler said.
He said it was an exciting proposal the community would likely support as it was for a commercial hotel and not a workers camp, which had been criticised in the community.
The motion was supported by nine councillors, with three voting against it.
Mr Bowler said one councillor opposed the motion because they were worried about the quality and whether it would be a 4.5-star development.
The solar farm proposal is for a section of the old Boulder Golf Course, with Mr Bowler saying it would help provide more power for the community.
“Western Power are struggling to provide more power and I think if all the developments went ahead, all the light and heavy industrial developments . . . Western Power would not be able to meet that demand,” he said.
“So anything that is going to bring more power in, and it will be initially solar, one would hope it would eventually become solar battery, will be a welcome addition.
“We will make money out of it for the ratepayer and create more jobs, particularly looking at Indigenous employment.”
The motion was unanimously supported around the table.
City chief executive Andrew Brien said the identity of the proponents would be revealed when the land acquisitions and disposals were advertised to the public.
So there was already a ‘proponent’ for that land back in 2023.
And I think AVL has said they are still seeking land for the proposed Lumina project _?
Oh well
But I wonder who has dibs on it ?
(It would be a lovely promotion to have every aircraft coming into Kalgoorlie flying over well labelled VSun batteries?)
cheers
