Battery leasing is a great solution to what seemed to me like the insurmountable problem with VRFBs...and that is the decision makers doing the buying know they don't benefit from the long-term benefits of VRFBs, so they have been buying the cheaper lithium batteries. They get the lower upfront cost and the benefit - knowing they'll be gone by the time the drawbacks of lithium compared to VRFB appear.
If AVL have a business model of leasing the battery with smaller upfront costs than buying lithiu ion it could turn into a very profitable business indeed. Will take some deep pockets to set up though.
