The Herald Sun reports that the material suggests avoiding “gendered terms” such as husband and girlfriend instead of the non-gendered partner, and mum and dad rather than parent. Students are also encouraged to ask others which pronouns they use.

The cognoscenti here at HC will recall the ridiculous statements on behalf of the gay community leading up to the vote on same sex marriage. We were warned that if we had an open, honest and frank debate we would end up with bodies littering the suburbs as members of the gay community would be driven to suicide given their fragile condition. As we know that didn't happen. If these social engineers removed the emotion from their arguments people might at least listen to them.

IMO -- calling kids --- whoever looks after them at home -

'Parent' -- rather than using the term 'mum' or 'dad' or 'mother or father'

certainly in conversations with kids one doesn't know -

I think there's a hell of a lot of good in that -

there's heaps and heaps and heaps of kids out there who are in single parent families for lots of reasons --

deaths, divorce - you name it.

Imagine a kid whose mother died a year or so back from breast cancer - something that's not exactly uncommon in young others --

then, some bonehead is talking to the kid and innocently says -

'oh, maybe ask your mum what she thinks?'

how's that one going to go down???????????

whereas - asking 'oh, maybe ask your parent what they think?'

ok - you could still create great pain - if the kids parents were killed in a car crash - but, you've minimised the risk greatly

If you could find a better word in common language that people were comfortable with -------- then - you would drop the risk to zero

it's actually not that bad an idea at all
