China's CATL Aims to Raise $2.85 Billion for EV Battery Projects

BEIJING — CATL, China's top electric vehicle battery maker, said it aims to raise up to 20 billion yuan ($2.85 billion) in a private placement of shares to fund its battery projects and boost working capital.

The fundraising will help CATL to expand its battery-making capacity in Fujian, Jiangsu and Sichuan, as well as an energy storage research project, the company said in a filing to the Shenzhen stock exchange late Wednesday.

The company has partnerships with Tesla, Volkswagen and BMW.

In a separate filing on Wednesday, the battery maker said it plans to invest 10 billion yuan in a battery manufacturing base in Ningde, where it is headquartered.

On September 5, Ningde Times New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. On September 18, Ningde Times signed a global power battery procurement agreement with Daimlerka bus Company. On September 25, Ningde Times New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. On October 14, Ningde Times New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. ("Ningde Times") signed a long-term strategic cooperation agreement with (Volkswagen Caminh (Latin America) Card bus Company, one of the three major commercial vehicle companies in Latin America ("VWCO" for short). The Ningde era will provide VWCO with full life cycle battery solutions, including battery development, manufacturing, recycling and cascade utilization.

On October 18, Ningde Times officially broke ground at its first overseas factory in Thuringia, Germany. According to the plan, the Ningde Times European plant covers an area of 23 hectares. The production line includes cell and module products, and 14GWh battery capacity is expected to be achieved in 2022.

Recently, according to some media reports, Tesla and local battery company Ningde Times reached a preliminary agreement on battery supply to the Shanghai plant and will discuss a potential global battery supply agreement, which means that if the news is true, the Tesla battery supply chain, which has long been controlled by Panasonic, will face major changes.

According to the report, Tesla CEO Elon Musk traveled to Shanghai in late August for a meeting with Ningde era executives for about 40 minutes before the two companies reached a non-binding agreement and planned to sign a formal supply agreement no earlier than 2020 for the purchase of power batteries for Model 3, but there was no guarantee that a partnership would be reached. However, neither side verified the above information.
