Last night the devolution agreement was signed but it still needs to pass House of Commons and Senate approval.
This is the first step of a planned effort that have been in the works for over a decade and is now funded for three years by Canada and expected to finalise 2027.
You have to ask yourself why would Canada do this?
Canada have wanted this to happen for some time but Nunavut needed to show it was ready and able to support itself legally. Talking about a location that is very high in critical minerals but very very sparsely populated and lacked legal framework and expertise to support its own decision making.
Previously Nunavut would agree on business opportunities with a mining company for example but then need to ask Ottawa if it was okay to go ahead, costing time and money and years of political debate. This agreement would remove that and allow Nunavut representatives the authority to say yes.
Canada have been pushing for investment in Nunavut and provided funding at a higher rate for Nunavut than rest of Canada to pay for infrastructure related to critical mineral exploration, development and mining with the goal of increasing supply of critical minerals outside of China / foreign entities of concern.
This agreement works in Canada favour as it will have the intended plan promoting rapid growth in the region through fast tracking exploration and mining development as well as reconciliation between first peoples as well as decreasing dependency of Nunavut on Canadian funding assistance so overall works in both parties favours and is a positive development for AW1 moving forward.
